Storyteller's LLM Policy

What's Storyteller's policy around LLM usage?

Storyteller, both the technological product and the surrounding community, strives to be human-centered in its goals and engagement with the world. We also know that LLMs are becoming an increasingly large part of that world, and different Storyteller maintainers use them to varying degrees ourselves when we work on Storyteller.

On that note, and to help us avoid burnout as maintainers, we have some requests for anyone interested in participating in the Storyteller community or platform.

  1. Write in your own words. We have no expectation of formality or technical language when writing Discord messages, opening issues, or opening merge requests. If you only have a minute to jot down the issue you're experiencing, whatever you can express is better than nothing! Please don't copy prose from an LLM into conversations with maintainers. If English is not your first language, please feel free to write in whatever language you're able to express yourself in — we will do our best to translate.
  2. Only submit code that you can explain yourself, in detail. Some parts of the Storyteller codebase are very complex and have to account for a very wide variety of edge cases and runtime conditions. We are very open to community contributions (some of our favorite contributions have come from the community!), but please only open a merge request with code that you can explain without the assistance of an LLM. If you don't have the level of programming ability for this kind of contribution, that's perfectly fine! We promise we will do our best to meet your needs with the resources we have.
