Warning: This rambling post is loooong.

So... It seems that maybe some people are curious about how I organize my 2000 book Storyteller library??

If you are one of those people, grab a tea or coffee (something with some caffeine) and make yourself comfortable. I have some thoughts...

Announcing @storyteller-platform/epub v1.0.0

Storyteller has had its own EPUB library for a very long time (originally published as @smoores/epub!). It's always been published to npm and documented, but it's also always had some limitations that we suspect have limited its utility outside of Storyteller itself.

With this v1 release, we think we've eliminated many of those limitations. Let's talk about what's new!

v3.0.0-beta.44: Storyteller has a new aligner, and it's FAST

· 27 min read

Heya!

Okay I know what you're thinking: "There's a v3??". Yes, sorry, we didn't really announce it anywhere other than our Discord server (do join!), but if that's the main thing you take away from this you can install it using the v3.0.0-beta tag! More to follow on that soon!

But don't mind that: we want to talk about our new alignment process!

TL;DR
  • We have a new CTC forced alignment pipeline which produces much more accurate alignments
  • That pipeline can use two groups of models, MMS and Quartz/Citrinet
  • The Quartz/Citrinet variants can be up to 20 times faster than even the most highly optimized versions of the previous Whisper based transcription
  • It is available in Storyteller v3.0.0-beta, @storyteller-platform/ghost-story@^0.3.0 and @storyteller-platform/align@^0.2.0
  • Maybe even faster in the future! Try it out now!!

v2.14.0: A big update to file management

· 8 min read

Heya!

After the last failed attempt at writing an update blog post, I'll try to keep this one brief so there's actually something to read!

TL;DR
  • Much richer metadata from books: sort, filter and, well, actually see the page counts and durations of your (audio)books.
  • Storyteller can now (re)scan books in your library to pick up changes to the files from external sources (Calibre, Audiobookshelf, etc.)
  • All auto-import rules have been moved to the settings page. You can set as many as you like, add books to multiple collections, and add ignore rules for specific folders.
  • Simplified file management model. Books in the Storyteller UI now more directly correspond to the files in your asset folder. Deleting a book doesn't leave a bunch of orphaned files around.
  • Advanced file management features: you can now add, replace, and remove audiobooks and ebooks to/from existing books.

v2.7.0: A Reworked Transcription Engine

· 6 min read

Hey there!

We're extremely excited to announce the release of Storyteller v2.7.0! This release completely reworks how Storyteller handles the most expensive part of the alignment process: transcribing the audiobook.

TL;DR
  • To use GPU acceleration, you need to change your Docker image to one with GPU support, removing the need for the time-consuming whisper.cpp build process everytime you restart Storyteller
  • Added (experimental) support GPU acceleration for Intel (i)GPUs
  • New experimental "Turbo mode" setting for faster local transcription
  • A dedicated cli tool, ghost-story for offloading transcription to a different machine
  • Much more efficient memory usage when using remote transcription services

Merry Christmas!

I’m absolutely jazzed (and not a little relieved) to announce the first v2 release of the Storyteller mobile apps! This has been a long time coming — the new apps represent a vision that’s been in the works for 9 months, starting with the first commit to the web v2 branch.
